Hello everyone!
Wow! We had a fantastic time on Saturday. September 30th as our some of SOCKAC kids were treated to a workshop by Captain Wesley Bennett and his wife, Amelia " aka Amelia Earhart". Thanks to Evangeline Parish Library staff for providing the space for us.
Well, let's look at what the kids learned on day one of a four-week adventure!
Captain Wes started the workshop by introducing the kids to some aviation and aerospace language. Then, a couple of short videos were presented to help the kids learn to use the terms correctly. The group engaged in a deep discussion on four fundamentals of flight--Lift has to overcome Gravity and Thrust has to overcome Drag.
Then, the critical thinking process began with a paper plane challenge! The group was given a sheet paper to construct a paper plane with their model idea. The kids engaged in discussions and analysis of each design and the benefits and drawbacks of each design. Other factors such as how color and certain design items that could potentially affect the weight and flight of the plane were discussed.
The group was given the opportunity to create and design a plane using foam boards. Each had to come up with their "Pilot Call Sign" which they will be addressed by for the remainder of this four-week adventure! I am "Gram Girl". (I can hardly wait until you see my plane!)
The group did a great job on the plane designs-- lots of creativity! Again, each was discussed with reference to weight and flight. Lastly, we put more fun into it with a contest. Matt Hebert, employee of Evangeline Parish Library graced us with his service as the judge.
First place-- "Bunny" (Nylah Guillory) $ 7.00 cash
Second place-- "Starr" ( Zaleria Calvin) $5.00 cash
Third place--"I" (Ariena Boast) $3.00 cash
Next Saturday (October 7th) we will engage in more exciting adventures!
This is a trial introduction to aviation and aerospace with Cap Wes Bennett. The class for this introduction is currently filled. Keep watch for SOCKAC's 2024 calendar to be published in December for lots of fun-filled learning adventures! This is a nonprofit organization,
and all donations are welcomed. We are committed to providing the kids with many options of exploring their greatness. We are also committed to continued partnership with GRACE/RED CIRCLE, under direction of Mrs. Carleen Bellard and St. John Baptist Church, Girls Scouts under direction of Mrs. Cinema Edwards, and upcoming Freedom Center-- Freedom Family Church all of Ville Platte, Louisiana. Together, we will save our babies!
Be blessed,
Linda Fontenot, Creator of SOCKAC
